Mayor Oweland Letter

Greetings, Honored Newcomers,

It is with great pleasure that I, Mayor Eda Oweland, extend a heartfelt welcome to thee upon thy arrival in our resilient and storied town of Saltmarsh.

Under my guidance, the Traditionalists strive to preserve the heritage and time-honored ways of Saltmarsh. We cherish the maritime traditions that have sustained our town for generations. The Traditionalists remember the terrible times during the Sea Princes’ raids and have no desire to see the crown’s ambitions lead to open war. Though I do not support the Loyalists, we remain loyal subjects of the crown, yet we are weary of heavy taxes and minimal support.

The Loyalists, led by Eliander Fireborn, a retired officer, seek to strengthen ties with the Kingdom of Keoland. They are proponents of modernization and expansion, aiming to transform Saltmarsh into a more prominent port town. Our town is bustling with opportunities for employment. Various businesses within Saltmarsh offer work for those with a range of skills, from shipwrights and fishermen to artisans and traders. The town frequently hosts visiting adventurers and traders, adding to its lively atmosphere. Recently, Saltmarsh hath even attracted scholars of history with the opening of our new museum in the year 577 CY, drawing learned individuals to explore our rich past.

In an effort to bolster the kingdom, many goods have been redirected to support the war effort. This necessary measure hath unfortunately given rise to an increase in smugglers and bandits. These nefarious individuals seek to influence and undermine our endeavors, sowing discord within our community. As the crime of smuggling hath become more prevalent and costly, many perpetrators have been apprehended and taken away in iron chains.

Recent attacks on Seaton and Saltmarsh have left many feeling vulnerable, and some have even fled. Though no large-scale battle hath yet occurred, pirates seem to have grown much bolder or desperate. We are eager to welcome those who can face these villains whilst also embracing the culture of our town. Even as we pay our taxes to the crown, we feel vulnerable. The King doth send more guards to the roads of Keoland, and the Duke is meant to protect us. Yet, Seaton is half a day away by boat. By the time we send for support, it is oft too late.

Councilman and merchant Anders Solmor hath recently taken his father’s seat on the town council following the tragic murder of his father. Young Anders hath stepped up as the new head of the family business, bringing fresh vigor to our town’s leadership during these troubled times.

We hope ye will find Saltmarsh to be a place where ye can contribute thy talents and join us in our efforts to maintain and enhance our beloved town.

Eda Oweland

Poem of Saltmarsh

So, heed the wind and hear its cry,
beneath the cloudy, storm-streaked sky,
Saltmarsh calls to those who dare,
to unravel mysteries there.
In the quiet of the night,
with the moon’s pale, eerie light,
Saltmarsh whispers tales anew,
of legends born and heroes true.
