Regional Politics

Yeomanry

A beacon of democracy in its realm, is governed by the elected Freeholder and spokesman, Chrispen Redwell. The region, with a population exceeding 100,000, boasts Lewick as its capital, nestled amidst formidable mountain ranges. Formed initially by the union of two native human tribes, the Flan and the Su, and later joined by the Aridian people, Yeomanry is home to a diverse populace, including a substantial population of dwarves. Mining activities thrive in various locations, contributing to the region’s wealth in minerals, such as iron ore, gold, silver, and precious gems. Notably, a small enclave of High Elves is believed to oversee the area’s security, potentially stemming from past conflicts with Orc raids.

Amidst the natural riches and diverse inhabitants, Yeomanry contends with challenges posed by bandits and smugglers traversing the region. The rugged terrain, including the Cool Marshes to the south, provides ample cover for illicit activities, as bandits take advantage of the region’s strategic location and porous borders. Longspur, the largest city renowned for its artisans and gem-cutting expertise, also serves as a hub for smuggling operations along the Javin River.

However, the region boasts more than just one significant city; scattered across its islands are other notable settlements, each with its own unique characteristics and challenges.

One such city is Port Torvin, formerly a prosperous hub of trade and commerce, now fallen into disrepair under pirate rule. Despite its decline, it remains a crucial point of maritime activity, along with other ports and towns dotting the coastline and islands of the region. The hold’s geography, characterized by coastal features like the Javin Bay and the Gulf of Glea, has given rise to a network of ports, each with its own tale of wealth, decline, and piracy.

With a population surpassing 60,000, its capital city, Gryrax, thrives as a bustling center of commerce and culture, boasting a diverse population from across the realm. Despite its Dwarven rulership, Gryrax prides itself on its neutrality, serving as a Free Port where goods and services of all kinds are exchanged, fostering a vibrant and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Within Gryrax’s walls, one can find esteemed institutions such as a renowned wizard school and orders of paladins and clerics, adding to the city’s allure and prestige. However, the principality faces threats from the nearby Jewel River, where orc and goblin skirmishes pose a constant danger to its borders. To safeguard against such conflicts, Ulek maintains several garrisons and guards, particularly in Haven Hill, serving as a crucial frontline against potential warfare.
